First Grade

The year is moving very quickly in First Grade.

We are very excited about our upcoming field trips.  We went to the Planetarium the first week of March.  We observed the day sky and night sky.  In May, we will be visiting Herr’s Potato Chip Factory to see the process of how potatoes are made into potato chips.  This trip ties into our upcoming Social Studies unit which will begin in April.

Keep working on Phase III of the Patriot Program.  Students need to know their state, city and county.  In May, the Patriots who have completed all 3 phases will enjoy a trip to the B&O Railroad Museum.

We have begun our new Science unit on how animals grow and change.  During this unit, your child will be responsible for taking care of our new class pets – MEALWORMS.  Take time to discuss with your child what they have learned about what animals need to survive, and how they grow and change.

Keep practicing those Math Facts and remember to READ, READ, READ!!!

We are in need of tissues and hand soap.  If you are able to donate either of these items, we would really appreciate it.

Meet our First Grade Teachers

Miss Joseph and Miss Duke

My name is Jennifer Joseph and this is my first year teaching First grade at Havre de Grace Elementary. However, I had the pleasure of teaching Kindergarten here for the last year and a half.  I feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with some of my previous students for an additional year.  I graduated from Towson University with a degree in Early Childhood Education, and I am currently enrolled in the Graduate Program for Special Education.  I look forward to sharing an INCREDIBLE year with our students!

My name is Bethany Duke.  This is my third year teaching first grade at Havre de Grace.  I graduated from Salisbury University with a B.S. in elementary education.  I am currently enrolled at Towson University in the Masters of Reading program.  I am excited to watch your child take ownership of their learning as they grow and develop this year.

Mrs. McCashland

Hi, My name is Julie McCashland.  This is my 4th year teaching first grade at Havre de Grace Elementary.  I have also taught 4 years of kindergarten in Ohio.  I have a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master's Degree in Elementary Reading and Literacy.  I look forward to being an enthusiastic teacher who encourages your child to see the possibilities in their learning.
